P5 Early Man Workshop
Today, both P5 classes went to the hall for a special workshop. This was led by Rita and Michael and was all about Ancient Man. The children were divided into groups and moved around the different stations to take part in the activities. They got to:
- Draw and label Ancient Man’s tools.
- Weave wool on looms.
- Construct walls using Hazelwood rods.
- Grind wheat on a Quern stone to make floor for bread.
- Practice their hunting skills by throwing weapons at a toy beast.
- Dress up in stone age clothes and perform.
- Identify different objects used by Early man.
- Make a clay pot and decorate it.
- Construct models of ancient tombs.
Afterwards we left the hall and came back to our classrooms. Here each child made an axe and even got to decorate it with feathers, wool and fake blood!
Rita also gave us a presentation on life in Ancient Times in Ireland and the children were very excited to see how they learnt to make fire. A bread cake was placed onto the flames and cooked. Rita explained we couldn’t have any because our stomach’s weren’t used to the basic ingredients that our ancestors would have used.
What an amazing and informative day. Thank you to Rita and Michael for helping us learn about our history in such a fun way.
