Year 7 Potato Planting

19th Sep 2024

Year 7’s topic this term is the Irish Famine 1845 -1851. We were amazed to discover that before the famine the men ate 65 potatoes per day and women and children ate 55 potatoes per day.

We decided that we would like to try to grow our own potatoes.  We prepared the raised bed and investigated how to plant the potato tubers.  We discovered that we had to plant them in rows 30 cm apart and 4cm deep.  We have to keep them well watered and when we see shoots we will put more soil on top of them. We are looking forward to harvesting our potatoes in 10 weeks time.
