First Aid & Medicines

First Aid

At Whitehouse Primary School there are currently a number of provisions in place to ensure that our pupils receive the most pastoral and effective care possible. Within the school we have a number of staff who possess up-to-date qualifications in First Aid. To achieve these, they have undertaken First Aid training which is regularly refreshed through the year. These staff members are spread around the school and have their contact details visible at internal telephones should they be required.

Also distributed around the school are a number of well-maintained First Aid Kits. These kits are checked and replenished regularly. Should your child require any First Aid treatment, the staff member providing the treatment will issue them with a slip containing details of the treatment provided.

Medication Forms

Within our school there are pupils who may need to take medication during school hours for long or short term medical needs, or in emergency situations. The Education Authority directive is that the prime responsibility for a pupil’s health rests with the parent/guardian. However, to enable pupils requiring medication to participate as fully as possible in school activities the school may agree to assist a child with medical needs. If at all possible, it is better that medicine is administered before or after school. We do however understand that this may not always be viable. When this is the case, parents must present the school with a completed Short Term Care Plan form. This form can be found on the section below or from the school office.

If your child requires medication to be administered over an extended period of time then a Long Term Care Plan should be completed. To complete this you should arrange a meeting with the child’s teacher and agree a plan for the long term administering of medication. Please note that this is not required if the medication is in relation to :

  • epilepsy
  • diabetes
  • allergies (requiring an epipen).

When medication is required for any of the above a Long Term Care Plan will be created in conjunction with the school nurse. Once this is completed it will then be presented to the school.
