Year 5 Topics:
The Sea: Children will have fun exploring the sea, including finding oceans of the world using an atlas, researching the habitat, diet, appearance and behaviour of different animals and the dangers of water pollution and what we can do to improve it.
The Titanic: Children will embark on a journey to discover the history of the Titanic, including how and where it was built, what it was like to be a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class passenger, take part in a debate about who was to blame for the sinking of the Titanic and children will even get the opportunity to become engineers themselves and build their own 3D model of the famous ship. In addition to this, children will look at a timeline of events, imagine what they might pack in their case if they were heading on this journey.
Life in Ancient Times: Children will step back in time and discover what life was like in ancient Egypt. Topics covered will include pharaohs, hieroglyphics, the River Nile, mummification, ancient Egyptian houses, food, gods and goddesses and pyramids.
Extreme Earth: Children will focus on our earth and the extreme forces that impact it. This will include how volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and the difference between tornadoes and hurricanes.
Trips: Hazelbank and Titanic Museum.
Highlights: Outdoor learning, choosing their own books from the library, creating memory boxes and presenting them to the rest of the class and completing various other projects relating to their World Around Us topics. Children will also take part in their first carol service, an Easter workshop and enjoy being part of KS2 Sports Day.
Visitors: Local fire fighters and the 'Life in Ancient Times' workshop.
Finishing Times: 3 p.m. (Monday - Thursday), 2.10 p.m. (Friday)

Accelerated Reading Days: Mr Dowds's class - Tuesday and Thursday/ Miss Carson's class - Monday and Wednesday. It is essential that children bring their books in to school on these days.
P.E. Day: Thursday
Important Equipment: Children should come to school with pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, colouring pencils, a glue stick, a ruler and a blue biro. It is important that these resources are replenished half-termly so that children are ready and able to learn.
